High alching vs flipping in OSRS

Updated

High alchemy and flipping are the two classic gp-from-the-GE methods, but they suit different players. The right choice comes down to your capital, your Magic level, and how active you want to be.

High alching

High Level Alchemy converts an item into a fixed amount of gp (its high-alch value) for the cost of a nature rune and some XP. Profit per cast is small but guaranteed, and it trains Magic — but it requires constant clicking and the item's GE price must sit below its high-alch value minus the nature rune cost.

Flipping

Flipping needs no runes and little attention once offers are placed, and its returns scale with capital and buy limits rather than clicks. The trade-off is price risk and the 2% GE tax. For most players with a few million gp, flipping out-earns alching per hour while being far more AFK.

Frequently asked questions

Is high alching or flipping better for making gp?
Flipping usually earns more per hour once you have a few million gp and is more AFK, while high alching offers a guaranteed return and Magic XP for lower-capital players.
Can you do both at once?
Yes — many players place GE flip offers and high alch items while they wait, combining a guaranteed return with the spread.
